You cannot become a vet if you’re just in it for the money. But the vet staff are always very upset when the wildlife do not make it while in their care. If they only have 1 vet who can see wildlife, the animal is going to have to wait until that 1 vet is available. Instead, like most things in wildlife rehab, it’s a matter of funding and staffing. Maybe you have had different experiences, but I think it’s extremely unfair to say that vets will prioritize paying clients over severely injured wildlife. The vet clinic we work with has one specific wildlife vet with previous experience. Many do not, and the solution is to refer to an outside vet. The best rehab facilities have vets on staff. In fact every rehabber is required to have a vet contact that they can go to for care for their animals in order to get licensed. I work in wildlife rehabilitation currently and in my state vets may legally treat wildlife as long as they do not posses it for (iirc) over 24 hours. It’s hard getting the right help and it’s frustrating when it’s falling apart. Wildlife is not a priority for the vet, paying customers are. They may very well have an arrangement with the vet but I’d go directly to the rehabber. Bring the bird to a rehabber, I’d just find out if they’re open and go. Keep the box in a dark place at room temperature. They usually end up spilling the water and getting wet and hypothermic. An injured/stressed bird will not eat or drink. In the future, put the bird in a box with a towel on the bottom so they aren’t sliding around. Vets cannot legally be in possession of wildlife and they don’t have any training in wildlife.

Without knowing what kind of internal injuries it had, they may have been nothing anyone could have done. This bird may have been doomed from the start. If you were physically there in person with the bird, the stress of hearing and/or seeing dogs barking and people is incredibly stressful. Even if they are avian specialists, it’s parrots, people’s pets who are much less prone to death by stress. Vets are not equipped to deal with wild birds. I used to do wild bird rehabilitation and we would never tell someone to just go to a vet.
